Why Your Option Chain Might Not Match What Your Broker Shows

Two "correct" chains can still disagree

Pull up the same strike on two different screens and it's common to see two different prices — not because one is broken, but because an option chain isn't a single fact, it's a snapshot assembled from a data feed, a timestamp, and a set of rules about which quotes count. Change any of those three inputs and the number on screen changes with it, even though both chains are reporting real, current market data.

Delayed data vs. real-time data

The most common source of mismatch is simple: not every chain is running on the same clock. A funded brokerage account typically gets real-time, streaming quotes because it's routing your actual orders. Free or third-party tools frequently run on data that's delayed — commonly by around 15 minutes, the standard exchange delay for non-professional redistribution — which is exactly why you'll see that disclosure on OptionScope and most free market-data sites. On a quiet stock, a 15-minute-old quote and a live one might be nearly identical. On a stock moving fast, or in the minutes after news, they can diverge meaningfully. The fix isn't to distrust delayed data — it's to know which kind you're looking at, and never route a live order off a delayed screen.

Composite NBBO vs. a single exchange

Even at the same instant, "the market" for an option isn't one number. U.S. options trade across more than a dozen exchanges simultaneously, each posting its own bid and ask. The National Best Bid and Offer (NBBO) is the best of those quotes stitched together into a single composite line — that's what most chains display. But some platforms show a single exchange's book instead of the composite, and during fast-moving periods the two can quote noticeably different prices for the same contract, because the composite hasn't caught up to a quote update on one venue yet, or vice versa. Neither is "wrong"; they're answering slightly different questions about where the market currently sits.

Last price lags the bid-ask

A subtler mismatch shows up even on a single, live chain: the "last price" column and the live bid-ask spread aren't the same thing and don't update on the same schedule. Last price only changes when a trade actually prints — and on a thin, low-volume contract, that trade could be minutes or hours old. Meanwhile the bid and ask are quotes, not trades, and they move continuously as market makers adjust. If a stock has moved since that last trade printed, the last price can sit stale outside the current bid-ask entirely. The bid-ask midpoint is almost always the more current read on where a contract would actually transact right now.

What to actually trust when reading a chain

Three habits cover most of this. Know whether the screen you're reading is real-time or delayed before you act on it. Treat the bid-ask midpoint, not last price, as the working estimate of fair value on anything you're about to trade. And if a number looks off compared to another source, check the timestamp before assuming either feed is wrong — a five-second-old composite quote and a two-minute-old single-exchange quote can both be perfectly accurate answers to slightly different questions.
